in um you know he said to me I he said I heard that that you’re really a good trainer and so and so forth he needs help with his right hook yes right I mean that’s why he’s there that’s why we know about the left yes it was there but it wasn’t enough so the thing was at that point then to develop both hands equally and to make him a two- fista puncher and so we just went with numbers and numbers and numbers because I had philosophy at the time that well the only thing is he’s better with his left than the right because he uses it more and it’s all about usage
and if he uses them the same he would get better and better and better so in the gym we did that a lot but then at dinner time i’ make I go home with him and I would make him eat his food with his left hand I mean his right hand I would make him cut his meat and eat his food with his right hand because that’s what Eddie Eddie fudge did with me at one time and I said and he slowly both hands became coordinated enough to be equal and he he now now he’s a two- fisted puncher he he says I’m ready for the fight Freddy don’t worry about it says I said you going to win

what’s the game plan going in um the game plan pretty much for Barrera is that I didn’t think Barrera could handle Manny’s speed and Manny you know he’s very quick and he’s exposive with those those combinations and because a lot of people thought I was again biting off too much they lot of people thought that that he was going to get killed in the fight this is how it played out hard left hand straight on the button by Pacquiao down goes perrera they probably some in this Arena who didn’t really know who Manny Pacquiao
was or what his chances might be against Marco Antonio barera now they know Paco is striping Barrera with left hands and he backs Barrera into the ropes and hammers him again and now there’s a big cut on barrera’s Left Eye Manny it’s too late for the body right now let’s go the head I wouldn’t send him out for the 12th round Manny I don’t care how proud he is there’s no way a great fighter should have to go through three more R to this no cuz pop guy is not backing off if you had a guy that was Hur Here Comes pera’s corner barrera’s Corner man is up

kids in the gym and um I’m I’m not done yet are you able to take care of Mom at this point yeah I built a dup Lex so she could live on one side and I could live on the other and I could see her every day and it worked out really really well and um she passed away this last Christmas but it was really sad but um she had cancer three times and the third time she was just she was just really tired of fighting fighting it and just it was probably the Mis most miserable 14 days of my life because watching somebody get sicker and sicker or in somebody you love like that it
it’s it’s difficult it were you there by her side when she died yes yes with the other brothers no just me just me because she lived closest to me because I I was the only one that could help her and have her live the life that she wanted to live and just be not worry about anything she didn’t have to worry about bills or payments and if she wanted some more clothes or whatever she wanted she got and like I said she took vage of my quote but that was okay it okay it was good and you had closure with her by being I had closure with her and I was I’m giving her I’m I’m trying to get her
to eat some applesauce because that’s all she can eat so and um she um she she like wakes up and says to me Freddy I want to thank you for everything you’ve done for me and I says where did that come from like you know and I and I made me a little bit sad so I I just kind of walked out of the room and I started to cry I said and then I went back in and then um when I went back in she had passed away that was her last that’s the last thing she said oh man and it was just um it was it was difficult what did that mean to hear that yeah like I I really knew that she always knew that I I
loved her and that I cared for her and you know it was um it it was right I I I think I was the one that needed to be there because I could help her the best you’re a good son Fredy you’re a good son maneuvering starts here you’re training De La Hoya in 2007 De La Hoya is going to fight Mayweather you already know Floyd you’ve known Floyd since he was 5 years old corre now you’re you’re training Golden Boy going against Floyd yes so what are you thinking about this fight it’s very difficult fight but they is to to to to beat Floyd for for Oscar to beat Floyd he
had to really cut the ring off and set him up and keep keep keep his back to the robes and use his vicious jab um he he he’s got a great jab because he’s he’s left-handed and he leads with his power hand and um his that that weapon was really great in the seventh round he starts following Floyd a little bit and when he’s following Floyd he was a little bit behind him so the jab was just a little bit shy and was wasn’t wasn’t Landing anymore and Floyd Floyd was taking the counter shots and Landing combinations and they they gave Mayweather credit for that in in the broadcast but it was
Oscar who wasn’t doing cutting the ring off like he was supposed to like he did in the early rounds he trusted you early and didn’t trust you late after the fight he told me Freddy I would have never lost with you in my corner he said you’re the best trainer I’ve ever ever had thank you for everything and the next day I read the news paper I was fired so he knew how to make me feel good because I felt good for a moment but you read that you’ve been fired yes but um you know somebody’s got to take the blame in boxing and usually is the trainer so I’m I’ve been fired many times in
my life um and sometimes like I had a recently I had a fighter win the world title and I got fired after he won the title I says this seriously doesn’t happen but um it’s the sport you signed up for it’s the sport I signed up for so now Pacquiao is then going to move up and he’s going to face De La Hoya yes so that has to be a little bit of sweet revenge for you no not at first um I thought at first Pacquiao was too small did you try to stop it no but the government of his his country did they tried to this country did try to stop that fight from happening why because the weight
difference and the size difference oh they were concerned that his safety yes yes but the reason that fight happened is because when I was training Oscar couple sparm Partners were supposed to be coming in from Philadelphia and they were late and I needed Spar really badly and there’s 106 pound of world champion that train was trained at the same gym as us Calderone and he told me Freddy I can give a couple rounds okay let’s go let’s go to work Calderone gives him a beat for for the first day his SP and I said Oscar I said what you know what’s wrong he says well you know
he says he’s Le small and he’s a southpaw and he’s really quick Freddy I said okay I say okay so then we Spar like another day and the sparing Partners don’t come yet so then the third day is far and I said okay Oscar go out there and hit this little guy as hard as you can just one time for me and show him who the boss is and he couldn’t do it so then after Bob arum had just called me up and asked me if we wanted to fight Oscar with Pacquiao and I said no he’s too big and I hung the phone up and about 2 in the morning I’m thinking about and dreaming about the the the fight in the sparring
with the little guy who’s a southpaw and really fast like Manny Pacquiao and I at 2:00 in the morning I pick the phone up and I call Bob arum I said Bob I says make that fight happen he says you sure I says 100% yes just based off that sparring session yes based off that sparring session in my memory of him fighting the Southpaw which Pacquiao is and fighting speed which Pacquiao and Calderon both have and Pacquiao goes up to 147 and this is how the fight turned out Pacquiao is annihilating Oscar deoya and in the seventh round deoya has zero answers for the Pacquiao assault no no we
cannot do anything he’s very slow right now okay now the faints are going to draw his bad outy weeks has a tough decision in front of him we’re going to stop it better we stop it that’s it’s our decision Oscar it’s a decision that we have to take there’s no reason to continue with this he’s too fast are you okay you with that you agree yes Pacquiao has osar I just know I get the young fresher guy out there I trained Oscar you know and I saw him very sluggish in the Forbes fight I thought you know he couldn’t pull the trigger anymore and I proved I was
right getting fired doesn’t feel so bad now after that um but a credit to you though for something so small to understand you know what he can’t answer to my guy and taking that chance says a lot about your intuition that fight was just like um everything really went really perfect for we had we had a great training camp we had great sparring take some credit here Freddy you deserve it that was there’s somewhere somewhere in that broadcast where I say to him he can’t handle your speed and that was to me that was the key that was you based everything off of that off that yes and Pacquiao
part a great fight I mean do you know you got a showdown coming up with Mayweather possibly yes um so 2010 negotiations start yes and there it gets ugly and there’s accusations Floyd’s saying that you know Manny’s doping like there’s a lot going on here lot yes how tough is it to train a fighter who you don’t know when that fight is going to take place it’s very difficult because when the fight’s signed it’s much easier but the thing is this fight was just it was just really a lot of lot of work get just get getting everything done from the glove selection to The Rules meeting
uh to the uh uh the legal the legal hand wrapping in Las Vegas um one inch tape and they’re trying to use two inch tape Floyd’s playing a lot of games here he plays a lot of games a lot of games but is this a stall tactic in your opinion that I believe it was a stall tactic to yes just get to get me any a little bit older you got to schedule some fights and ju Manuel Marquez is next up and this is how it played out Marquez was off balance again now gets his deep back and tries to Roar back to nail Pacquiao with the right hand oh that’s another knock down get up Pacquiao
is still faced out and we have to ask Will Manny Pacquiao ever be seen in the ring again it’s tough to watch even now it’s tough what did he do wrong there you know it really a flaw that um happens quite a bit when a righty and the Sala fight each other and Manny stepped in and stepped on his foot and lost his balance and Marquez knew to throw the right hand at that time I give his trainer a lot of credit for teaching him that wait so he knows that Manny’s off balance so you immediately swing if someone steps on your foot and he rolls off it and he’s right in front of you throw the
right hand and I learned a lesson that night by his trainer being a little bit smarter than me Manny was so close to ending that ending that fight and is like maybe two punches away from ending that fight the other way but he Steeps on his for gets loses balance and gets caught with with with the huge shot and um but how did that change him he lost his Killer Instinct um and he uh he didn’t he he was going into fights after that and with the idea not I don’t have to hurt my opponent but I just have to beat him in I just have to beat him in decision I don’t I don’t have
to knock him out I don’t have to hurt him and I said well man that’s kind of a i as a fighter I said I don’t believe that choice is really in your hands and I don’t think they should possibly think that way because you’re great because of of the way you win fights and the way you lose fights I mean you know when when you fight for it and go for it there’s always a chance that you might get it on the other side I mean that’s a risk man would always take can you get it back I don’t believe so all right so you have the Mayweather Pacquiao fight you are apprehensive about him
getting in there did you try to stop that fight no I didn’t try to stop that fight but oh no but he was hurt I yeah did youy I didn’t try to stop the fight until I found out that the injury was that bad the injury on his shoulder would need surgery to fix and we’re going to go go into the fight and W with the bad shoulder and so we had made an agreement that Mayweather could shoot his hands up which he does quite often because he has very fragile hands and he does use no a a painkiller to in in his hands to be able to get through a fight and we had Manny could get a painkiller
for her for his shoulder so but the night of the fight he was allowed to use it and we weren’t did Mayweather’s Camp know that he had an injured shoulder yes there was so much money at stake there Freddy there was a lot of money at stake but that’s why it wasn’t going to get canceled yes but how tough was it to send a an inferior fighter in there or a guy who wasn’t 100% very very difficult I I still feel bad about letting that that fight go because um you know I I I but I wasn’t powerful enough to stop that fight from happening the big promoters and you know and so much money you know
the payday was tremendous I mean but um you know I don’t do this like for the money though I just do for the I love the sport you know and uh and I didn’t think Pacquiao was capable of fighting his best fight onehanded how is your corner different with what you would normally have if Manny was healthy Manny couldn’t be as aggressive as I wanted him to be and he had very limited um with a with a one-handed fighter he he was very limited with going in there with a guy that has two health healthy hands and you know Mayweather is one of the best boxers out there and at this
point in Mayweather’s career he he’s one of those Fighters that he’s very careful he doesn’t want to get hurt uh and he just he just out blocks everybody but the Mayweather we saw like earlier when he fought osar in those in those days he was a great fighter I think a great boxer and can do everything but now you know in the Pacquiao fight he just uh um he just wouldn’t take he doesn’t take a lot of chances and so forth he did enough to win he and he and he just says enough to win but if Pacquiao is healthy does he win that fight I believe so well not just healthy though but
maybe a little younger a little more fire I don’t know you you think about that that it got to that point and and Floyd played the game he played the waiting game and he and he won yes he got paid he he got Pacquiao at an age where he knew that his punches weren’t going to hurt him he could avoid him he could avoid and it was an older fighter it was and uh when Pacquiao fought his last fight in Australia after the fight I said Manny I said you know what I says I think being a senator and being a fighter at the same time is like maybe a little bit too much because I said you know it’s
it’s hard enough being a world champion fighter or it’s or might be just as hard being a senator but I says I think that you should strongly think about giving one of those up for now and choose the one that you like best and he has not spoke to me since that since I said that so I think I really pissed him off with but I was just trying to give them advice and I thought I thought it was good advice because it’s true and we had a great run together we we had 16 years of uh great wins and great defeats you know most marriages don’t last that long yeah but boxing trainers
never yeah you can get fired after winning a world title this is true yeah yes I I want to bring out your quote here because I think you’ve kind of epitomized this quote throughout this conversation my answer to almost anything was to fight you fought literally you fight differently now how would you sum up this quote everything in my in my life the answer to everything was my fist and that’s that’s where I would separate the men from the boys maybe I try to teach these guys to be the best they can be at what they do but you truly care about them as people I truly
do care about them I I do I you know if they need a place to live or a place to stay there’s always there’s always room in my house and I and they they take advantage of it sometimes but that’s okay so what’s next um I have about 500 people come through my gym every day now and the Gym’s it’s doing well and uh people are going and having a good time and so forth and and the gym is a fun place to be and people say how can you spend 6 days a week 12 hours a day at the gym I says it’s a lot better than you think I said you know something new happens every day you know it’s just
like there’s a lot of characters in the world that in the world of boxing and uh we have a lot of characters at my gym wildcard gym has become this celebrity hangout yes it’s at times Mark Walberg yeah Walberg uh Stallone stopped by all the time yeah Sylvester he’s big fan of who else comes by Arnold SW sagger that’s pretty good stuff yeah Arnold always wants to say he said Freddy when are you gonna teach me out of box I said when you show up at my gym but then when he comes to the gym he always got a shoulder sore or something like that but they they’re really good guys and
like if I get my haircut at Joseph Francos and they they hang around the same area and then they have a lunch in Cafe Roma then they always invite me to lunch because they want to talk about boxing uh I got some fun questions here what’s your favorite movie The Natural now I was told Kung Fu Panda that was there for a while I forgot wait but Kung Fu Panda came after the natural here yes but um I met this girl oh okay what pisses you off lazy people I don’t like lazy people I don’t like PE I don’t if
